MANNERS: Etiquette Mistakes You Didn’t Know You Were Making

You say please and thank you when you’re supposed to, you don’t chew with your mouth open or put your elbows on the table ... your manners are pretty good, right? Maybe not. According to etiquette experts, there are plenty of mistakes we are all making without even realizing it.

Here’s everything you don’t know, but should ... especially if you hope to meet royalty someday:

  • Never shake hands while seated. Even if you are introduced while seated, always stand.
  • The guest of honor at any event always sits to the right of the host.
  • If a glass has a stem, you should always hold it there and not by the cup ... even if you are only drinking water.
  • Soup should always be scooped away from you.
  • At the end of a meal, place your napkin to the left of your plate to signify that you are done eating.
  • Other than a wedding ring or religious jewelry, diamonds are only supposed to be worn after 6 p.m.
  • Never write "Please RSVP” on an invitation. It’s redundant. Simply write RSVP. (Redbook
